Spanish Mediterranean Interior Design Informs the Calming Interiors of Layà Villas

Behind the Design

Laya-Villas-Villa-A-HR-02

For Layà Villas, Jenn Sinclair from Comma Projects wanted to create a uniquely tranquil home environment that stood apart from convention. They developed the inspired concept of separated twin duplexes with similar yet individually distinctive designs. Layà means ‘freedom’ in Filipino, and the aim was to capture that idea of liberty in the aesthetics of both homes.

“I was really inspired by a lot of the Spanish-Mediterranean coastal homes, and my whole vision was that I wanted people to walk in and feel like they’re walking through a day spa,” says Jenn.

“I've got the decorative Venetian plaster and a lot of curves to add to the softness against a beautiful, polished concrete floor. I've also found this beautiful sandy-coloured marble.”

“The pattern of the marble is [...] free-flowing, [with] a lot of organic swirls. I wanted to pair that with a little bit more of [the] rustic, textural, handmade Bejmat tiles.”

ABI Interiors’ brushed copper tapware was chosen due to its earthy tones and to seamlessly tie in with the neutral theme of the master bedroom. The luxurious spa feeling of this space is attributed to a colossal custom sky window emitting sunlight from the extended ceiling above — beautifully showcasing the handmade tiles.

You can equally appreciate the consideration that has gone into the curvy aesthetics of the exquisite outdoor area. An indulgent pool has a ledge that stylishly curves over the water, and the overall design is pleasingly consistent with the tranquil, minimalist interior theme.

Jenn says she wanted a different experience with Villa B, designed as an indulgent weekend retreat — blending a mid-century modern interior with the distinction of Art Deco furniture. Organic shapes, warm colours, and luxurious pieces create an unmistakable sanctuary here.

The darker contrasts of the walnut cabinetry, furniture, decor, and the lighter tones of the flooring and walls achieve a balanced, welcoming feel. ABI Interiors brushed brass tapware complements the scheme, adding vitality to the warm beige bathroom tastefully adorned with terracotta-style wall tiles.

“Now that the project's coming to an end, I'm definitely excited to pass it on to the new owners and hope that they'll enjoy the space as much as I have enjoyed creating it.”
